Principal’s Message
New Beginnings
Jeremiah 29:11 “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’
Dear Parents and Families,
Last weekend our 4th grade students hosted the 8:30am Sunday Mass for our parishioners and families. As always, our students rose to the occasion, preparing well and practicing their parts and demonstrating their Catholic identities. Thank you to our 4th grade class, and to their teacher, Mrs. Atkins for a beautiful Mass celebration.
One of the reasons our students are so successful whenever they are called to speak in front of an audience is the STMS Speech Program. This program is one of the reasons that makes our school special. We have received numerous compliments from folks outside our school community when they attend an event at which our students are called to speak. The poise and composure, as well as the skill with which our students can deliver a message is certainly noteworthy. Our schoolwide Speech Tournament is next week. We hope to see family members of our finalists in the audience in support of their student(s).
In Christ,
Elizabeth Glaze

Partners in the Gospel
Dear St. Thomas More Family,
Last weekend marked the formal announcement of the Parish Families through Partners in the Gospel, including the confirmation that we will be partnered with Holy Rosary. As Archbishop Etienne noted in his letter, “the road ahead will have its twists and turns, and may seem long and rugged at times, but the Lord will always be there as our companion and guide.” Change can be hard and can make us uncomfortable. There are still many unknowns with what our partnership with Holy Rosary will look like and this uncertainty for those of us in this parish and school that we know and love can be unsettling.
There are a few “knowns” at this point in time. First, what we know is that we have been assured that there WILL NOT be any changes to schools in the near future. There is no plan or talk of merging schools with Holy Rosary or changing our Pre-K – 8 program. Leadership teams at STM and Holy Rosary have made steps to discuss our partnership and have a plan to introduce the School Commissions of both schools in a joint meeting in March. What we also know is that both schools will need to remain open to serve the number of students we have currently enrolled, as well as future students as we grow our school populations. We also know of the Grace of God in times of change and are assured that we, as a community, can walk together through this process.
We need each and every one of our families to stay together as we weather the journey of the unknowns ahead. Our close ties in our community at STM, and the care we have for each other and our school, will see us through to a bright and promising future.
In Christ,
Father Stephen Okumu, Pastor
Elizabeth Glaze, Principal

Black History Month
On Friday, February 23rd, students, staff, and faculty of St. Thomas More convened to participate in a presentation on Black History. The program featured two speakers from Everett Community College: Ms. Dorrin Wanjiru and Mr. DeLon Lewis. (Ms. Wanjiru is also the parent of current 5th grader, Paul, and STMS alum, Estelle, Class of ’23). Both speakers emphasized the significance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” as an anthem uniting African-American identities. They also delved into the background and upbringing of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Additionally, the presentation highlighted other notable black historical figures such as Nelson Mandela, Malcolm X, Mae Jemison, Madam CJ Walker, and Kendrick Lamar, showcasing Black Excellence throughout history. During the event, students Selina W. (3rd Grade) and Mussie A. (6th Grade) shared their insights on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., while Nolan M. (1st Grade) discussed his class’s reading about Ruby Bridges.

COVID, Flu and RSV
As we head into the cold and flu season, I would like to send out a general reminder about health and safety guidelines. We have a host of illnesses circulating, including strep throat, continuing COVID cases, and at least one reported case of RSV.
Recommendations of the Snohomish Health District as we navigate the cold and flu season include ensuring that if students have active symptoms from any respiratory infections and/or have a fever, they should not come to school. Students who have had a fever must be fever-free for 24 hours without the use of medication before returning to school. In addition, The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends teaching children to cover their coughs and sneezes using their elbow or a tissue, and to always wash their hands afterwards.
Also, as we have had a recent case of RSV, I am including a resource provided by the Snohomish Health Department on signs of RSV, in addition to general guidelines and benefits of vaccinations for flu, COVID and RSV.
*If you have any questions regarding STMS guidelines, please contact the school office at (425) 743-4242. Please note that although STMS guidelines are based on the Washington State Department of Health and the Snohomish County Health District, we reserve the right to add extra precautions.
